How did you meet? Tell me your love story!
We met at Boston University where we both worked with the student theatre group, Stage Troupe, and occasionally went to class (note: Ashley always went to class). Although we ran in the same circles, it wasn’t until the summer of 2007 during Stage Troupe’s summer production of The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 (either the worst OR the greatest play of all time) that we started spending time together. At a party at Bobby’s palatial Allston basement apartment, Ashley overheard Bobby saying he had tickets to a production of the musical Parade at the Boston Center for the Arts, and boldly invited herself along. Neither of us really knew if it was a date or not. The next day, Bobby left Ashley a confidently detailed (or transparently terrified) voicemail confirming the evening plans. They met by a fountain in Copley Square that was overflowing with soap bubbles due to the acts of some criminal mastermind and went to see the musical. Afterward, they took the MBTA’s Green Line home together, a mode of transportation that’s faster than walking but slower than say riding a camel. Instead of making plans for a nightcap, Bobby gave Ashley an awkward hug, said “k bye!” and ran off the train as it pulled into Harvard Ave. Ashley was left confused about where this was going, both the T and the relationship. Despite this inauspicious beginning, and with the invaluable help of determined friends, T’s Pub, and frozen pizza, we were “official” a few weeks later.

How did he propose? Tell me your engagement story!
We could never remember precisely when that “first date” to Parade was and had settled on celebrating our anniversary on July 4th. Ten years go by, during which not a single person ever asked either of us “so when are you getting married?” In preparation for the proposal (which again was predicted by absolutely no one) Bobby went into his old Gmail calendar, scrolled back 10 years and actually found the day of their “first date.” (Why it never occurred to us to do this before can never be adequately explained.) Fortuitously, Bobby’s theatre company, Writers Theatre, was producing Parade in the summer of 2017, exactly a decade later. He got them tickets for the night of June 14th, left Ashley an assured/awkward voicemail that afternoon, and the two watched the show. While riding their camel home afterward, Bobby suggested they swing by the Lincoln Square fountain, which recently had been besieged by a soap bandit (complete coincidence, honestly, not an elaborate part of this proposal). The fountain was not full of bubbles, alas, so Bobby gave Ashley a bar of soap to make up for it. He then surprised her with an awkward hug, said “k bye!”, and started to run away. But, this time, he turned around and came back with a ring. Bobby thought he had been super smooth about it all. Ashley totally saw it coming.

What drew you to the venues you chose?
The church (St. Matthias) was a block from our apartment and just happened to work out beautifully. We had been to VOLO Wine Bar occasionally for dates – we ended up there after a mix up on a date (Ashley bought tickets to a show, and put the wrong date in the calendar, – it was an earlier date, so we got to see the show later!) So instead we went for a walk and ended up grabbing a drink at VOLO. We were in the middle of looking for venues and realized VOLO would be an awesome place.

What inspired your wedding decor? Did you have a theme in mind?
We thought VOLO was already beautifully decorated so we spent a lot of time trying to showcase what they had. We nixed tablecloths for the beautiful slate and wrought iron surfaces where possible, and added personal touches of the wedding flower (sunflowers) which we love and are overall just a happy flower. Other than that, we just added pictures of us and family, and some decorative lights in the back coach house to lighten that space up a bit.

Which part of your wedding did you want to WOW your guests?
The event space – we felt like it was truly beautiful and intimate and a great place to share and celebrate with our guests. And then the excellent food and wine VOLO prepared put things over the top.

What was your absolute favorite part of the day? Does your spouse have a different favorite?
Ashley – my favorite was the speeches. As someone who doesn’t like to be the center of attention, it was great to sit and let someone else stand in the spotlight. And, our friends/family did a beautiful job!
Bobby – mine was just seeing everyone enjoying themselves so much at the reception. Which let us relax and enjoy the day ourselves. And then seeing how many stayed to the end because they were having such a great time was amazing too.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in planning your wedding?
It’s hard to name just one! Probably just coordinating everything. Even though we selected a restaurant and probably had it easier than those who coordinated with a caterer and venue, it seemed like there was always some little things that had to be addressed.

If you could go back and do anything differently, what would it be and why?
Make sure to try all of the food! The day goes by so quickly that if you don’t also try to enjoy the things you’re offering to your guests, you’ll miss your chance.

Any advice for couples about to get married?
It’s your wedding and you don’t have to do anything because it’s “tradition” or because someone else wants you to. One of the main reasons we were able to relax into our day and have a great time was that at no point were we doing anything we didn’t want to do.
