Katlyn + Joe had a fun and romantic wedding with all things fall decor – pumpkins, colorful leaves, and beautiful jewel-tones – at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois. One of my favorite parts of their day was their first look. When Katlyn + Joe finally saw each other that day, you could tell right away they were less nervous and anxious. They were so excited to just get married and enjoy the rest of their day!
I loved the personal touches throughout the day. Katlyn’s brother was their officiant and threw in some Game of Thrones references. Katlyn wore jewelry made by her aunt and wrapped herself up in a quilt from her grandmother when it got chilly. The reception decor was all about Katlyn, Joe, their families, and their dogs!
How did you meet? Tell me your love story!
We met at a bar. Joe danced terribly, Katlyn laughed at him. Joe thought Katlyn was sassy, Katlyn made fun of Joe when he hit on her. Joe asked for a date, Katlyn pretended to play hard to get but then drank a bottle of wine and texted him the night before the date.
How did Joe propose? Tell me your engagement story!
Joe proposed in January on a hike with our two doggies. We went to our favorite cliff that we sit on and look out at the world at the summit. Our stupid Squishy dog almost fell to her death and Joe popped out a ring.
What drew you to Cantigny Park?
It was outside and within driving distance of the city! It also had beautiful plants, trees, flowers, outdoor fall stuff.
What inspired your wedding decor? Did you have a theme in mind?
I always dreamed of having a fall wedding. The colors are my personal palette, I like colder weather, the changing of the leaves is beautiful. I wanted something low-key and true to the weather, with as many accents that don’t impede on that.
Which part of your wedding did you want to WOW your guests?
The flowers! Flowers were most important to me, as well as my dress. And the pumpkins. And just nature.
What was your absolute favorite part of the day? Does your spouse have a different favorite?
I don’t even know. Seeing Joe for the first time was my favorite and his was first look, as well. It reminded me why we were doing all of the craziness and why Joe is my favorite person because he relaxes me so much. The ceremony was beautiful because of my brother’s speech and Joe’s vows.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in planning your wedding?
Dealing with input from others.
If you could go back and do anything differently, what would it be and why?
I’d have just danced and not tried to speak to every single person who was at the reception. And, started my hair earlier to aid to our schedule.
Any advice for couples about to get married?
Have fun at the reception, spend the night with your new spouse because they are all that matters.
