When we arrived to the pier where you board the boat to head to the Alcatraz, my first thought was, “oh! A sea lion!” Then, “if you really wanted to escape the island, you could swim that.” Once we got on the boat and into the water a bit I changed my mind. There’s no way unless you were physically training for that. I assume which is why they chose that spot for a prison.
On the way to Alcatraz we got a pretty good view of the Bay Bridge and Treasure Island.
Apparently a few people did escape Alcatraz, but were captured shortly after. So I guess you could swim if you wanted to. It’s about 1.25 miles from San Francisco which is still risky if you ask me.
When we got to the island, there was an option to take the audio guided tour or follow a tour guide. We followed the tour guide a bit, but I got distracted and just wanted to take photos. I’m pretty sure we were the only ones that didn’t do the audio tour since we went through the exhibits backwards against the flow of the audio-listener traffic. We probably missed some really cool facts about the prison and the island itself, but I just wanted to wander and shoot. If I ever go back I’ll probably do the audio tour.
Props were in some of the cells to give you an idea of life inside the prison. A mannequin head was in one of the beds (which I did not take a picture of because I hated it).
They had a pretty large library for the inmates. Only a book shelf and a few benches are left.
Some of the cells are open so you can go inside and get an idea of what tiny space they had. There are a few solitary confinement cells as well. I went in them and quickly got out. I know no one’s going to lock me in there, but I just got a weird feeling being in that small of space.
It was a really windy and foggy day, so you could barely see the Golden Gate Bridge off in the distance.
A cruise ship as big as Alcatraz departed on its way to Hawaii. I wanted to go with! I’ve never been to Hawaii and it’s definitely on the list of trips I need to take.
After our trip to Alcatraz, we took the boat back to San Francisco and were starving from walking around so much. We stopped at the first restaurant we saw that didn’t seem too touristy. We ended up at Butterfly which is an Asian fusion restaurant with a great view of the water. Besides almost dying from their super spicy mayo for the duck spring rolls, it was pretty good and I’d recommend it.
