Mike + Brooke had a small, intimate wedding celebration with their immediate family starting with a ceremony at City Hall followed by lunch at Tree Studios.
How long have you been together?
Mike and I met on the Hinge dating app and realized we were both studying/working at the University of Chicago. We dated for 4 years before deciding to get married. We didn’t do a proposal or engagement ring, but talked about getting married for a long time before deciding to set the city hall date.
What drew you to the venues you chose?
Chicago City Hall: simple, easy, straightforward, no fuss/frills, and no need to book long in advance – we were ready!
Dining Room at Tree Studios: Nearby City Hall, beautiful ivy filled courtyard tucked in the heart of the city, an intimate private option with a chef for our 10-person “micro wedding” (quiet space for our families to talk) – and we had full trust in Abby Carson, Event manager at Tree Studios!
What inspired your wedding decor?
The dining room at tree studios was beautiful on its own, and Abby Carson recommended we work with Tiffany Schimmerling at Oliver Dogwood for florals. She understood our vision for a very simple, classic look that was special but not over the top.
Which part of your wedding did you want to WOW your guests?
Mike: The food. We were able to accommodate our family members’ allergy restrictions and preferences and likes – many of our family members live in Miami and have a special spot for stone crabs- and even had DoRite donuts as favors. Brooke: The ease and simplicity of it all and that our decision for a city hall wedding wouldn’t make our day any less special.
What was your absolute favorite part of the day? Does your spouse have a different favorite?
Mike: Placing the ring on Brooke. Brooke: Same (placing Mike’s ring on him); And also seeing Mike’s hands shake as he put my ring on my finger! We also chartered a private sailboat with our families at night and had an incredible close-up view of the Navy Pier fireworks while out on the water
What was the biggest challenge you faced in planning your wedding?
Letting family members and friends who weren’t included know; we wanted an intimate celebration with our immediate families.
If you could go back and do anything differently, what would it be and why?
Nothing! It was just what we had in mind.
Any advice for couples about to get married?
Plan your wedding for what you want and don’t get caught up in what others want.
Anything else about your day that you’d like to share?
Don’t fret if it rains on your wedding day!
The sailboat we took at night was named the German word for “lost” – the captain explained that the named stemmed from the idea of lost in the moment/being fully present (not lost at sea) – and this was the perfect summary of how to view a wedding day.
