How long have you been together?
Jon and I (Becca) have been together since April of 2011. We met at work – he worked for me! From working together, to long distance, to now work enemies (Cubs vs Sox) – it’s been a wild ride. He proposed on our rooftop! It was so romantic. Then we had the best engagement shoot ever 😉 (You can check out their engagement session here!)
What drew you to MillCreek Wilde?
We knew that we wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of Chicago, and have a wedding in our home state of Michigan. Being carefree, laid back people, and wanted a venue to match our personalities. I started looking into rustic venues in SW Michigan – both close to Chicago, but far enough away to feel like an escape – and when we found MillCreek, I knew it was the one. We drove out one Sunday and signed on the spot – we had found our dream venue!
What inspired your wedding decor? Did you have a theme in mind?
I wanted to stay true to us as a couple, as well as be mindful the venue. With being in the woods, I wanted to keep everything simple but very pretty and rustic. I loved the dark colors of the flowers, with the touches of wood and gold accents throughout the space. To really allow the flowers to make it all ‘pop,’ I wanted the linens to be light and neutral. I really put trust in my florist to take my vision and run, do what they do best, and I couldn’t have been happier with how the decor turned out!
Which part of your wedding did you want to WOW your guests?
All of it! I wanted everyone to feel welcomed, love all around them, and most of all, have fun. From the pre-ceremony beverages to the cocktail reception with fun batched cocktails and passed appetizers, to the s’mores by the fire and the band playing well into the night, I wanted everyone to enjoy themselves. Throughout the planning process, I kept relying on the fact that our band was amazing, and they would ensure that everyone was on the dance floor having a great time. And they did not disappoint! I was blown away by Brena Band and the energy they had, I received so many compliments on how they were the best wedding band they’ve ever heard. In the end, I wanted my guests to feel included and apart of our day, not just spectators, and I think we all accomplished that.
What was your absolute favorite part of the day? Does your spouse have a different favorite?
How can I choose just one?! As it pertained to us as a couple, I loved the ceremony. It was intimate, personal, and very much ‘us.’. As far as the wedding as a whole, I loved the reception and dancing. I loved Brena Band, they were so great and kept everyone having a great time.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in planning your wedding?
Finding enough time in the day! My fiance and I both work in baseball, so planning a wedding while in the middle of our busiest time was a challenge. And because we were getting married 2 hours away from Chicago, it was very hard to find the time to visit our vendors and have in-person meetings. I worked endlessly on ensuring all the details were perfect and had many sleepless nights, but in the end, I couldn’t have been happier with how everything turned out.
If you could go back and do anything differently, what would it be and why?
I wouldn’t change a thing about the entire weekend. Everyone and everything had a wonderful part in making it special and filled with love. Everything happened exactly how it was supposed to…even my sister spilling champagne down her entire dress 10 minutes before walking down the aisle, and the wedding planner drying her off with a leaf blower! It allowed for some laughs during a time where I would have been very nervous and antsy. With everything, I can honestly say our day was perfect and perfectly ‘us’.
Any advice for couples about to get married?
My advice would be to remember what is important to you both, and your guests. The small details that can keep you up at night really don’t matter in the end. Your guests don’t care what your escort cards look like, they remember if they ate/drank well and had fun. So throughout the entire process, I tried to focus on having the best of the following: Good food, good drinks, and a great band. Those 3 things equal a fun party in my book! Remember it’s about the two of you and the next chapter of your lives. It’s supposed to be FUN! Don’t let the little things weigh you down. And at a minimum, have a day of coordinator. I would have been lost without Lauren!
Anything else about your day that you’d like to share?
Weddings are very stressful and expensive, but every hour of planning and penny spent was worth it. I was thankful to have great vendors that really made the day so special and enjoyable for not only the guests but for us as well. I wanted the day to be filled with love and fun, and I couldn’t have been happier with how everything turned out. I’m so grateful to the amazing people around me who helped make our day amazing!
